The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was a wild story. A man speaks with a guy by the name of, Simon Wheeler, in order to ask after a man named Leonidas W. Smiley. Instead of giving the narrator the information that he asks for, Wheeler launches into a tall tale about a man named Jim Smiley. I look at the tale comparing to old people sitting at a old corner store and just telling all kinds of weird and outrageous stories about all kinds of stuff. Of course you know they gone involve some gambling as well.

I think I would leave out one of the stories we had to read this semester, but majority of them were all good stories and I learned from them. Plus I have never read some of them. I had to pick my least favorite it would be “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”The story is sooooo long and boring. I just didn’t find it interesting to me besides the part he was selfish and it took him so long to die. The Glided Six Bits just has certain parts of the story I disliked. I found Metamorphosis a little weird. Especially at the beginning and how the character turned into a roach.
The narrator only had a gun to protect himself and used if needed. Seeing the elephant peacefully grazing on the grass, the narrator did not want to kill him. The only reason he did was because the whole village was watching him and felt forced to kill the elephant for that reason. I’m quite sure everyone has done something that went against our morals, but did it anyway because of peer pressure. Peer pressure is so controlling! Every human been there and it’s something everyone will go through, but that’s a way how we all learn. It’s common for people to experience peer pressure. It mostly happens in school when you are trying to figure out who you are and the difference between what is right and wrong morally to yourself. Peer pressure comes at you at different situations.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, to the Gas Chamber” is one of those stories that will mess you up about the Holocaust. I did like the story even though it was tough to read and I truly felt sorry for the characters. I liked the story because all of it is true!! This is history and stuff like this catches my attention and I learn something new every time about this. I don’t see myself in being in the shoes of the people loading or unloading the people or even killing them. I don’t think or know if something so terribly like that. The way things have been going on or how things are who possibly knows where our world is going to be at. But I don’t think anything that bad will ever happen again or another . People know now how awful it was and it would be hard to fool and lie to people now like they were then.
I know Hitler was the leader of the Nazi concentration camps. Hitler wanted to kill all the Jews and had power over a lot of people. Jews were sent to the camps. The people were to bring all their stuff and were told they would receive. The Jews had to shave their heads because of the gas chamber. I also know that the Jews were told they were going to shower which was the gas chamber. In class we watched some of the videos of survivors. It was so sad and hurtful knowing that innocent people went through that hell. I just started thinking like that could’ve been me and so thankful and blessed. My heart goes out to those survivors. People suffered from dehydration and were not eating like they should have. People were just skin and bone, it was shocking. Jews worked long hours thinking they would be set free, but only worked to die. Its hard to believe someone can be that powerful and kill so many people and not care at all. Hitler didn’t have heart, and out of all those people no one stood up to say that this is awful and wrong or try to put an end to it. SMH
The story “Metamorphosis” is about a boy transforming into a man. However, since he never really became a man, he turned into a bug instead and died as a bug. He was still unable to risk out on his own. He needed someone to be on his side the whole time. When he was a bug he was still being taken care of. He didn’t even want to crawl out of the window to get help or etc, he just wanted to stay in his comfort zone. It is something we all go through. For some people or young people, it is exciting to move out on your own. When you’re own your own and your parents aren’t around to help or pay your phone bill or rent, that’s when reality kicks you in the butt and thats when you wanna go back home to mama and pops. But that’s a part of life and growing up. Your parents cant do everything for your entire life. Parents have to let go their kids and let them experience life for themselves in order to survive in this world. No one isn’t going to be on your side holding your hand your every step. I think that’s what the story Metamorphosis is all about.
The Gilded Six-Bits was one of stories that kind of messed me up lol. It is a sweet and touching love story but there are parts that should’ve been handle better or shall I how I would’ve handle it. The narrator makes you fall in love with the way Joe and Missie May loved each other. Their relationship was real and you could picture the love they shared. I was very disappointed in Missie May’s actions. I guess that’s how some women are. If I were old Joe, I would’ve made Missie May leave!! I would’ve got rid of her ASAP and her stuff without any sympathy. I understand Missie May was only trying to get some gold for her husband, but its certain things a wife just don’t do or should do. Joe has every right to act the way he does towards Missie May for her actions. Missie May slowly killed everything they built and she regrets it. Towards the end of the story, Joe found the courage to forgive Missie May and move on with their life. I could never forgive someone for hurting me. Joe just shows how strong his love is for his wife. Missie May is pregnant and their relationship is beginning to become normal again.
